Support Paul Stephenson's Ride to Conquer Cancer
The Ride to Conquer Cancer comprises 4 separate rides (Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth) taking place on the same weekend in October, 2012. Each ride is dedicated to raise funds to support research or support programs for a different state based organisation
VIC : Peter Mac Callum Cancer Centre
QLD : Queensland Institute of Medical Research
NSW : Chris O’Brien Lifehouse at RPA
WA : Western Australian Institute of Medical Research
The Melbourne, Perth and Sydney events are the inaugural Rides for those locations in 2012. In 2011, “The Ride” was introduced to Australia, out of Brisbane, thanks to the help of Rio Tinto. “The Ride” has a history of raising over US$40M of funds in Canada and USA to support Cancer Organisations. The 2011Brisbane “Ride” had over 1300 participants, and raised $4.7 million.
Riders in each location, in 2012, will be supported by hundreds of Volunteers and Crew Members who will provide meals, water and snack stops, gear transport, portable restrooms, safety on the streets, comprehensive medical services and an overnight campsite complete with tents, massages, and hot showers.
Paul Stephenson, from Telstra Procurement – Supply Chain, based in Melbourne has committed to conquering cancer by participating in The Ride to Conquer Cancer® benefiting Peter Mac. Paul will join thousands of other men and women in a history-making ride from October 27-28,2012. Paul will take part in a 200 km two-day ride through Victoria’s Yarra Valley and surrounds including a night of camping. Funds, raised by riders will support breakthrough research and the discovery of new cancer therapies at Peter Mac.
Unfortunately, one in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. And unfortunately, this means, too many Telstra staff, family and friends will be impacted.
Paul is rallying for the cause and cycling in The Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting Peter Mac, because he is a patient of Peter Mac. Paul has undergone his share of operations, tests and therapy recommendations in the last 2 years. He has always been very fitness oriented, and while he remains healthy enough, he intends to participate in the 2012 Ride, and give back to the organisation that supports him and his family. In doing so, he hopes his and others’ fundraising efforts, will bring longer term benefits to others.
Paul originally registered as an individual participant during late November 2011 (just after registrations for 2012 opened). He has recently established a Team (Team Unicorn) in anticipation of encouraging others to join “The Ride”. The team name is derived from the Unicorn Foundation. This Foundation is an advocate for Australian patients and carers for NET cancer that Paul has.
Each registered rider, and team member, is given a target to raise $2500 in order to qualify to ride during the weekend. Paul’s personal fundraising goal has increased several times over the last few weeks, thanks to the very generous support of Paul and Desiree’s (wife) network of family, work colleagues and friends.
Paul’s other goal, is to have a Team in each state, comprising Telstra staff, family or friends.
If this is not possible, then hopefully, Telstra staff will help support the cause via donations. These can be made via the following web site link.
